We mark our centennial with a year of celebrations. As part of the centennial
finale, we break ground for the New Century Project, which will increase
space, modernize and provide accessibility to our physical facilities.
1906
Since being organized
as the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel Church with 10 communicants,
Emanuel has weathered the challenges of change in leadership, members, and
neighborhood demographics.
1956
The congregation
makes a pivotal decision to remain at the East Dallas location and not relocate
in spite of the changing demographics of the neighborhood. Emanuel's ministry
gradually took on a new focus during the ensuing years as it evolved into
an inner-city church.
1975
Emanuel begins a
Spanish ministry that continues today.
1984
The congregation
sponsors an Indochinese ministry for a time after hundreds of Indochinese
refugees are resettled in the East Dallas neighborhood.
1990
Head Start opens
services at Emanuel for neighborhood children at Ericson Hall.
1991
Emanuel's church
building is approved for listing on the National Register of National Historic
Places.
1995
Emanuel is recognized
as a national historic place and is registered with the Register of National
Historic Places with the United States Department of Interior. Several committees
are formed for planning sanctuary restoration.
1996
Emanuel celebrates
its 90th Anniversary.
1997
Restoration work
is completed.
2002
Strengthened by our
traditions, Emanuel continues to look ahead, investigating ways to strengthen
and expand our ministry to our members and the neighborhood.
2005
The Head Start program leaves Emanuel. Ericson Hall becomes available
for church use.
